Job Description

We are seeking a full time graduate student to serve as the Graduate Assistant for Basic Needs during the 2025-2025 academic year.

The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Basic Needs will assist in the execution of basic needs services to under resourced undergraduate and graduate students at Ohio University. This includes assisting in the weekly operations of the Cats' Cupboard Food Pantry, administration of the Meal Bank program, reviewing and processing Emergency Microgrant applications, coordination of the Cap & Gown loan program, and assisting students in applying for SNAP benefits.

The GA will be a member of the Office of the Dean of Students team. The Office of the Dean of Students supports students in crisis, communicates with parents, chairs and manages the University's CARE team, and assists students in navigating the University system. The GA will be responsible for upholding the divisional expectation of inclusion and a commitment to creating a sense of belonging for all students. The GA will also actively participate in the Dean of Students Office goal setting, strategic planning, and assessment cycle.

Some of the responsibilities include the following:

  • Cats' Cupboard Food Pantry Operations;
  • Supervise undergraduate student employees who manage day-to-day food functions;
  • Work with campus and community partners to secure food donations for the pantry;
  • Assist basic needs coordinator in the procurement and purchasing of food for the pantry;
  • Manage pantry schedule and appointments using our pantry scheduling software;
  • Contribute to an environment in the pantry that is inclusive and welcomes all identities and perspectives;
  • Work one-on-one with students through the Emergency Microgrant process.
  • Promote equity through the identification and removal of barriers, facilitating of learning, and dignity in services, and empowerment of people.
  • Manage promotion and distribution of the Meal Bank program.
  • Participate in the Division of Student Affairs and Office of the Dean of Students by joining a committee, attending professional development opportunities, and participating in various in-service opportunities;
  • All other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program.

Graduate appointment recipients may not accept other full-time employment, either within or outside of the University. Graduate students cannot have two full-time graduate appointments.

This position requires you to be in person on the Athens campus.

Preferred Qualifications

The Division of Student Affairs has a partnership with The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education. First consideration goes to those students applying for, or admitted to, the College Student Personnel graduate program. We also encourage applicants from related fields that prioritize equity and access to basic needs including, but not limited to, social work and public health.

Pay Rate

$13,500 total for Fall & Spring semester (plus tuition waiver for partnering programs)

This graduate assistantship position offers a paid stipend. However, it does not guarantee a tuition waiver. Tuition waivers are made available to students enrolled in specific academic programs and colleges. Please inquire with the graduate program you have applied to determine if tuition waivers are available to you if offered a graduate assistantship from the Office of the Dean of Students.

Work Schedule

Graduate Assistants are expected to work a total of 300 hours over the course of the semester. This time period will begin two weeks prior to the start of the semester and conclude at the end of the semester. This averages out to approximately 18-20 hours per week. Must be available to participate in staff orientation and training during the two weeks prior to the opening of Fall semester. Some evenings and weekends may be required including: Opening Weekend, Welcome Week, and Interview Weekend.
