Job Description

The Assistant Director provides leadership, strategic planning, administration, and day-to-day decision making to deliver a quality experience and ensure the safe and welcoming operation of a comprehensive collegiate fitness and well-being program within the Department of Well-Being & Recreation. Primary responsibilities include the oversight of the Well-Being Program which includes a student-led coaching program, Exercise is Medicine on Campus, Bobcat ArtsCare and additional supportive initiatives, training services, and coordinates a campus-wide referral network.

Additional primary duties include the supervision of fitness outreach services and events, Group Fitness and Personal Training programs, and F45 training. This position will cultivate strategic partnerships with Division, campus, and community constituents to support and advance the department's mission to foster university-wide well-being. Personnel responsibilities include direct supervision of two graduate assistants, and approximately 50 Fitness and Well-being undergraduate student staff. Lastly, the Assistant Director will work closely with all Department staff and campus partners to create opportunities and communicate feedback to deliver a safe, quality end-user experience with Ohio University.

Program Development, Administration & Implementation

Designs, develops, and implements a comprehensive collegiate fitness & well-being programs including well-being coaching services, educational training programs or workshops, outreach and special events, social norming initiatives, F45 and group fitness classes, personal training, Exercise is Medicine, Bobcat ArtsCare, and advancing the Well-Being Referral network. This includes developing and implementing policies, procedures, practices and outcomes for well-being related initiatives, programs, and services. Identifies participant needs and initiates fitness and well-being strategies to achieve a consistent, holistic approach supporting and advancing university-wide well-being. Assess or evaluates each aspect of the areas of oversight compiling statistical data to create quality improvement strategies to deliver safe, quality, welcoming experiences, and student learning. Coordinates strategic partnerships and communications to university constituents to deliver robust integrative offerings. Maintains current knowledge of trends and best practices in areas of expertise and area oversight.

Staff Development & Teamwork

Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate and undergraduate staff and provides the ability to help others set and achieve goals. Provides leadership and guidance, promoting integrity, accountability and teamwork. Creates a culture of feedback to improve operations and services. Anticipates future needs of students, the program, the department, and the division and make proactive adjustments to staffing levels or structure to meet those needs. Develops and maintains working relationships, and positively influences and motivates staff. Facilitates processes to develop and implement change that effects multiple entities. Empowers both employees and users to view themselves as having potential to make meaningful contributions and to be engaged in their communities. Commits to the professional development of staff.

Resource Stewardship

Responsibly manages university resources including but not limited to finances, people, and equipment/inventory. Continuously evaluates operation efficiency, maximizes the impact of available resources, and seeks opportunities to enhance and ensure the financial strength of Well-Being & Recreation. Ensures that budgets comply within University and Department guidelines, policy, and procedures. Consistently monitors all revenue and expense budgets pertaining to area. Coordinates use of facilities with administrative staff to ensure proper and safe management and maintenance of all program facility space.

Risk Management & Safety

Develops, executes, and evaluates a comprehensive risk management plan for all areas of oversight. Assures that all areas of oversight comply with State laws, University policy and regulations. Anticipates and identifies issues and areas of improvement and produces viable and logical solutions.

Department & Student Affairs

Actively contributes as a staff member of the Department of Well-Being & Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs that upholds the well-being of the university community. Provides leadership, promotes collaboration, and facilitates effective communication across all department, divisional, university and community partners. Maintains current knowledge of the University, its environment, purpose, and affairs to be prepared to respond to appropriate issues. Actively participates in professional development opportunities and maintains knowledge of current trends and best practices within area of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology or Science, Public Health, Education or Physical Education, or related field of study (an equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered)
  • 3 Years of Related Experience
  • 1 Years of Management Experience


Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology or Science, Public Health, Education or Physical Education, or related field of study
Exercise-related training certification, or health and wellness/well-being coaching certification preferred
