Department Summary

The Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology (ICMT) is seeking a software engineer to lead the modernization of the MULTICORP™ software package and its subversions. This role focuses on improving and restructuring the legacy .NET and FORTRAN-based system using modern software engineering practices to enhance performance, usability, and scientific extensibility.

Key objectives include refactoring and optimizing legacy code, designing a cross-platform user interface, automating testing and validation against laboratory reference data, and empowering researchers to easily incorporate new physical models.

The developer will collaborate closely with ICMT researchers to translate research into robust, production-ready tools and ensure quality through standardized development workflows.

Success in this role requires strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to deliver solutions within a research-driven environment. A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent with experience using software such as NET, FORTRAN, Python, and other scientific computing environments is required

Position Profile

Plans, designs, and implements full-stack custom software solutions that may cross multiple technologies, multiple products and/or organizational units. Ensures applications meet functional, technical and security requirements; evaluates code to ensure it meets industry standards and is valid, properly structured, and compatible with browsers, devices, and operating systems. Performs detailed problem analysis and research, identifies options, proposes solutions. Utilizes business and technical knowledge and experience to identify and analyze needs in order to create solutions to meet unique and potentially conflicting customer requirements.

Level Summary

Performs professional-level work that involves basic, operational problem-solving. Independently resolves day-to-day issues and executes clearly defined tasks. Provides data analysis and informational insights to support decision-making.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None; may assist with training student employees.

Fiscal Responsibilities

No budgetary responsibility. May be responsible for validating transactions.

Solves routine problems with defined processes and guidance.

Independence of Action

Works under close supervision.

Communication and Collaboration

Collaborates with peers and follows guidance from supervisor.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and less than 3 years of related professional experience, or equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent with experience using software such as NET, FORTRAN, Python, and other scientific computing environments is required
