Department Summary

The Member Service Assistant (MSA) is a student staff member responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Charles J. Ping Recreation Center and assisting Campus Recreation. This position combines front-line customer service, facility oversight, and support to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all patrons. The MSA serves as the primary point of contact for patrons, manages access, provides clean and safe environment, and handles membership sales and related transactions.
Roles and Responsibilities

Customer Service & Campus Recreation Resource
  • Provide positive, intentional, and consistent customer service to all patrons.
  • Respond to inquiries, give directions, and provide guidance regarding facility operations, programs, and services.
  • Promote Well-Being & Recreation events, programs, and services by maintaining awareness and encouraging participation.
Membership & Point of Sale
  • Sell memberships, personal training sessions, resale items, concessions, and lockers.
  • Assist with program registration for facility and program areas.
  • Ensure accurate completion and entry of membership and registration forms.
  • Log lost and found items with accuracy.
  • Perform equipment management including check-in/out, inventory tracking, and cleaning.
Policy & Procedures
  • Regulate facility access by verifying proper identification of patrons and visitors.
  • Address violations of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete procedural tasks such as facility counts, shift checklists, communication logs, and other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain knowledge of facilities, policies, operations, programs, and procedures.
  • Explain departmental policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Stay updated on policy changes via email and group communications.
Safety, Emergency Response & Cleanliness
  • Ensure areas remain safe by cleaning, vacuuming, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Provide immediate emergency response to all accidents and incidents in the facility.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Maintain valid CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (training available).
  • Participate in risk management and prevention training.
Team Member & University Representative
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and professional staff.
  • Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Well-Being & Recreation and Ohio University.
  • Wear staff apparel and maintain a professional atmosphere.
  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory meetings and trainings.
Job Profile

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Performs a variety of tasks in support of Campus Recreation sports and facilities. May be responsible for operational support, member services, event management, social media management, equipment management, and/or ensuring a safe experience for patrons. Certification may be required for certain positions.

Level Summary

Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.

Fiscal Responsibilities:

No budgetary responsibility.

Problem Solving:

Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.

Independence of Action:

Works under close supervision.

Communication and Collaboration:

Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid before or during employment.
  • Ability to work independently and follow established procedures.
  • Strong professionalism, customer service skills, and willingness to learn.
  • Previous experience in hospitality, customer service, or as a Ping Center staff member.


Working Condition/Physical Demands:

This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.
