Washington Electric Cooperative is hiring a full-time billing specialist at our Marietta office. We are a locally owned electric distribution cooperative providing service to 10,500 consumer-members in portions of six southeastern Ohio counties.

Washington Electric prides itself on providing exceptional member service. The billing specialist is responsible for all aspects of the monthly member billing process, including preparing billing statements, reviewing accounts for accuracy, advising members on how to use energy efficiently, and assisting members with questions related to their electric service. This position works closely with all other departments and requires candidates with excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a passion for providing positive customer service experiences.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Schedules and performs monthly billing process
  • Communicates with and resolves problems that arise with third-party vendors
  • Plans and performs termination of service for nonpayment
  • Performs process of setting up member bank drafts and automatic credit/debit card drafts for bill payments
  • Performs daily deposit, ensuring accuracy
  • Serves as liaison between billing and accounting departments
  • Reviews and processes bankruptcy filings
  • Sets up and processes levelized (budget) billing
  • Authorizes and performs billing adjustments and credits
  • Attends and participates in work-related trainings, classes, and seminars to enhance job performance and performance
  • Keeps accurate time records and maintains other records as required
  • Ensured all functions of billing and member service follow cooperative policy
  • Supports general retirement and annual allocation of capital credits
  • Provides input to policy, processing, and procedure development

Education & Experience

Associate’s degree preferred; high-school diploma or equivalent required. Five (5) years of billing, data processing, bookkeeping or equivalent experience required. Additional training in accounting, data processing, and use of office machines is recommended. Must be experienced in Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Should possess a working knowledge of or be willing to learn the cooperative business model, service regulations, rates, and policies. Must be able to type/post data with speed and accuracy. Must be able to analyze and interpret billing data. Should demonstrate initiative and motivation to organize and complete tasks and meet deadlines, acting independently and with minimum supervision and direction. Must be proficient with using a personal computer and calculator as well as other office machines. Must be organized and able to multi-task.

License & Certification

Valid driver’s license required. Must be commissioned as a notary public in the state of Ohio (except if residing in West Virginia).

This position is not exempt from the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act, as amended.
